How does cavity wall insulation work?

Cavity wall insulation is a material that fills the cavity in your external walls, forming an extra barrier between your home and the outside world. Air acts as a natural insulator as heat does not travel through air very easily. The layers trap air in between cavity walls, the material used to insulate your home then traps air in between its fibres. Therefore cavity wall insulation is much more effective at retaining heat than empty cavity wallsThe insulation material is often made of mineral wool. The other common types of insulation are polystyrene beads or granules, or polyurethane foam.

If your home was built after the 1920s, chances are it’s got cavity walls. And unless it was built within the last 20 years, those cavities are probably empty. If your home is made of brick, there two ways to tell you’ve got cavity walls:

  • How old is your house? Most houses built after the 1920s have cavity walls.
  • How regular is the brickwork? If the bricks all look to be the same length, the chances are you’ve got cavity walls. A mixture of long and short bricks is a sign of a solid wall.

Insulation process

Many cavity walls can be insulated by injecting insulation material into the cavity from the outside. A professional will drill holes in the outside walls, inject insulation through the holes and then seal them with cement. The insulation material is usually either mineral wool or polystyrene beads, but polyurethane foam may sometimes be used instead.

To insulate your cavity walls, the professional drills small holes on the outside wall of your home. The installer then blows insulation into the cavity using special equipment. Once all the insulation is in, the installer fills the holes in the brickwork, so they’re hardly noticeable.

Thermal

Cavity walls are made up of two layers with a gap between them. Walls are constructed this way to stop rainwater leak into homes. If you have cavity walls, you will be able to fill that gap with insulation.

First and foremost, the thermal enhancements you will gain with cavity wall insulation will be sure to keep your house warmer in those cold winter months. As previously mentioned, you home can lose up to 35% of heat through the walls, therefore, by using a quality insulant to add resistance to this heat loss, you will conserve heat and keep it in your home, providing a better quality of life.

Carbon footprint

Getting a cavity wall insulation would reduce your carbon footprint and help make your home more energy efficient. You would be generating less carbon emissions along the way. As well as helping to save the planet you'll be saving yourself a hefty sum as experts say you should be able to make back the installation cost in five years or less due to the yearly energy bill savings you will make.
